White Collar - 5x06 Ice Breaker
Nov. 25th, 2013 09:10 pmI am seriously considering to shelf White Collar and stop watching it. Cause it's messing with my bullshit meter in ways that are difficult to tolerate.
See, I like my TV shows to be at least rooted in reality. Few TV shows are ever truly realistic, and I acknowledge that. But most that aren't sitcoms or soap operas at least try to do their best, and mostly even succeed. Yes, quite obviously White Collar has always strayed from the concept of trying to be as realistic as possible, and I've been able to overlook it in favour of such things as Neal/Peter bromance, Mozzie shenanigans or Caffrey capers.
But lately... Lately they're just delving into the pathetic. I feel insulted as a viewer. Cause they honestly want to make us believe that Peter can fool a Russian ice skating aficionado into thinking Peter's a professional skating coach by looking at ice skating commentaries for a few hours the night before? Pssshh, get outta here! That's beyond ridiculous.
Not to mention the whole Chapter 13 thing. Neal's heists used to be fun to watch. Now I just cringe because it's just so damn obvious that it'd never work in the real world. Not even if all security guards closed both eyes and clutched their hands to their ears.
Seriously, my interest is dwindling to a trickle. Not even the Bomer can save season 5. Not to jinx it or anything, but if you asked me, news of cancellation would come as a relief rather than a disappointment. Cause for some reason, I just can't stop watching altogether. There's that little bit of loyalty left to a fandom that I had a blast with for a certain amount of time. And that's not something that I'm gonna cast aside easily. But, man, Eastin and his crew aren't making it easy.
Let me add that, if you want to watch a show about undercover crime solving that is captivating and engaging, I can highly recommend Played. Unfortunately it's currently only airing in Canada (on CTV), but hopefully one of the American networks will discover its value and buy the US broadcasting rights before long. It takes a special kind of show that's making me want to write fan fiction after just seven or eight episodes.

Date: 2013-11-25 09:15 pm (UTC)I love this show - but I love when it is clever and funny and just plain too lovely to forget.
Right now, I cringe any time Peter and Neal are on screen together. Peter actively dislikes Neal (for what reason I do not know - Peter encourages Neal's questionable behavior and then shames him by calling him a criminal). Neal has given up being good because any time he tries he's kicked in the face. Peter seems to be actively trying to catch Neal instead of sitting him down and saying, I know you are up to something, I can see it on the anklet - STOP. I mean really it is horrible writing overall. These are not the same characters.
I feel badly too, because I know there is a close segment of the fandom that is having a good time with the season and waving away the troubles because the writers are giving into the idea of let's give them a little of what they want (firefighter Neal, butler Neal). All pretty too look at, not much else.
It is like a beautiful cake that takes like dirt or has no taste at all.
I am all kinds of sad because of this.
But at least I still have my Marvel fandom which I love to pieces as far as the characters go (and I can't say anything about the fandom because I only know like 5 people).

Date: 2013-11-26 07:52 am (UTC)The Peter/Neal dynamic is so out of whack that it's painful to watch. Agree with you there. I wish I was still among that part of the fandom who can enjoy the episodes with happy abandon, but I just can't. My brain won't let me. And I'm sad about it too.
Your Marvel squee always makes me smile. Can't say I share it, but I'm always happy when someone has their little happy fandom corner. Most of the shows I've been enthusiastic about lately have a super small fandom (if at all), so it's been a very lonely experience. But the good thing about most of the smaller Canadian productions is that the cast and crew are a lot more approachable. I've been having conversations with some of them on Twitter or via e-mail, which is a really great thing to happen. Guess in that regard I've been very lucky.

I genuinely don't want to hurt their feelings but at the same time, I feel so bad and sad about the direction of the show. Literally do not like to see Peter and Neal together anymore. This makes me very sad.
