So... time for another movie review-ish kind of post. Today we have two movies on the menu: A very recent one and a not quite as recent one.

Let's talk about Eclipse first. Yes, I mean the third part of the Twilight Saga. And, yes, I did go ahead and watch it on its opening weekend. Luckily, this time I didn't regret it because there were no annoying teenagers that ruined the experience and giggled every time Edward appeared on the screen.

Overall, I must say that I quite liked it. It still had way too much Robert Pattinson in it, but I guess that can't be helped. After not liking the New Moon movie at all, I really didn't know what to expect from Eclipse. The book was always sort of a not very memorable go-between for me because I like Twilight and Breaking Dawn best. However, I was positively surprised how well it translated into the movie.

My favorite part about it was that, while it has a good portion of action, it also has quite a bit of character exploration outside of the Bella/Edward/Jake triangle. I loved the scene where Bella gets to talk to Rosalie and the flashbacks to what happened to her. I equally liked (or even more so) the part where Jasper tells Bella about his past experience with the newborn army. We get to see way too little of the non-triangle characters, if you ask me!

Having been out to dinner with the guy once, it was a little disappointing that Mike Welch's role was so minute. I think we saw him only three times, and his lines aren't even worth mentioning. But I guess that's okay, he doesn't play a big role in the book either, at least not that I can recall.

Here's another point that seems to have evoked some discussions in the fandom (not that I follow it): The new Victoria. I didn't mind her too much. I thought she looked very similar to the old one, but in comparison I would lean towards Rachelle Lefevre.

Oh, and I'm convinced that in some scenes, Taylor Lautner's abs were supported by make-up, if not mainly for the fact that sometimes they were very prominent and in other scenes they weren't, even though the light seemed similar. Cheaters! Really, Taylor doesn't need that kind of trickery. And just for the record: I'm not even into the guy. He's a little young for my taste. Peter Facinelli would be more my type (but I really hate his ridiculously fake-looking vampire wig).

And while we're talking about abs, this segues nicely into The Tattooist. Never heard of the movie? Well, don't worry, neither had I -- until I dug a little into Jason Behr's filmography. I already mentioned that I rewatched Roswell the other week. Jason always struck a chord with me, and it prompted me to go look a little more into what he had done since Roswell.

He's had some lead roles, but they all seemed little indie movies that never made it to German movie screens (or if they did, they flew under my radar). Two of them sounded interesting enough for me to actually go ahead and buy the DVDs (which were both under 10 EUR). The Tattooist DVD arrived yesterday, and it felt like a movie night, so I watched it right away. (The other one I ordered was Shooting Livien, which I haven't received yet.)

I found the movie was okay, but nothing really great. I don't regret having bought the DVD, but it's not a movie I would readily recommend to the random person. It has quite a few interesting themes around tattooing (duh), and I actually learned something about the Samoan tattooing culture. Interestingly, the movie was important enough to the native Samoans that they gave Jason Behr and Peter Burger (the director) the title of Samoan chief.

If you're a Jason Behr fan, though, this movie is absolutely worth watching. You'll get to see lots and lots of Behr skin, most of it (fake-)tattooed. The dorky, fan-girlie part of me definitely got its money's worth. And if you can stop drooling long enough to look past the bare skin (there's this very nice naked butt shot), you'll get to see some skillfully subdued but intense Behr acting as well. The guy really knows how to get emotions and reactions across.

Now I just wish that Oliver Stone would get his Pinkville project resurrected, so that I can see Chris Marquette and Jason Behr in the same movie. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's gonna happen any time soon. Or ever... *sigh*

On a more positive note, I just saw that they're showing Moon in OV this week. Awesome! Ticket for Friday is already reserved. \o/
