... there comes 'Checkmate'. I'm talking about White Collar. So, yeah, I just watched it. And I liked it. A lot. Not super squee material, cause I thought the episode had a few problems, but I'm actually really happy with it. I'm gonna have to write a more composed review at some point, but before I went into the episode, I had a certain kind of dready expectation. Or, well, let's say I didn't know at all what to expect, but was fully prepared to be disappointed. Which I wasn't. So: Yay! \o/

And that's all I'm gonna say for now. Stay tuned for something more coherent in a few days.

I think I'm gonna go watch a really bad Peter Outerbridge movie now (i.e. Population 436). Why oh why do I do this to myself? *sigh*

It is? Personally, I think it's rather freaky and disconcerting. :-P But I regret nothing, so...

But, you know, sometimes you're actually positively surprised, because Population 436 wasn't half bad. Not a masterpiece, but also not as trashy as I thought it would be. It was actually watchable. (Yay!) Though for a POB fan kind of a waste of energy. He had a handful of super-short scenes and barely more than ten lines. And he died there at the end at the hands of Fred Durst. (I hope you don't mind the spoiler, but I figured you wouldn't want to watch this one, would you?)

There's been more positive surprises during my Let's-Try-To-Watch-Anything-He's-Done-In-Recent-Years spree. The TV movie John A: Birth Of A Country was wonderful, and the indie Ill Fated was so bizarre that it was a hoot to watch. He's also currently starring in a Canadian six-part mini series called Bomb Girls that's fantastic and that I'm devouring as it airs (new episode tonight!). But of course then there's cheap crap like Reviving Ophelia or Heartland that makes you groan as you self-reflect to cancel that out. But, hey, I'm enjoying the hell out of all this, so it's all good. :-)

Lol, nah, it's fine. We've all been there ;)

I've heard good things about 'John A', must get round to it. Isn't Heartland the one about the horses? *shudder* My Canadian housemate made me watch a lot of that.

Me saying that I thought John A was very good actually means a lot, because normally I'm not a fan of period pieces. And I'm actually quite sure I would have enjoyed it, even if Peter Outerbridge hadn't been in it. (But of course there was the extra bonus of hearing him speak in a Scottish accent all throughout the movie!) You probably saw from my squee post that he and Shawn Doyle actually earned themselves an ACTRA Award nomination for it.

So, yeah, I will highly recommend it, but with the disclaimer that you'll probably get more out of it if you know a little bit of Canadian history. Which of course I didn't, being German and all, so I read up on it on Wikipedia before I went in. Helped me a lot to understand a little more of the political intricacies.

Yes, Heartland is Beverly Hills, 90210 with horses. The shudders of doom are still running down my spine as well. POB did a great job with his role, but the rest was just terrible. And he didn't exactly play an amiable character, so... I feel sorry you had to go through more than one episode of it.

lol, it was quite traumatic - and I have a phobia of horses so... Which character did he play?

I don't tend to like period stuff very often either, but I remember the reviews were pretty persuasive. If I check it out I'll keep an eye out for PO! ;)

Well, I love horses, but that didn't make the show any more bearable to watch. LOL He played a guy named Brad Borden (and it's telling that I know the name by heart), the no-good father of one of the regulars (one of the teens). He was in episode 2x08. If you've seen it, he drives a cattle truck to the ranch that has horses in it he was meant to bring to the slaughterhouse, though he wanted to do the right thing and took them to the farm in hopes of rescuing them. In the process he tries to reconnect with his son whom he's alienated in the past cause he was in trouble over gambling or something equally shady. He wore this scruffy full beard as well, which was kind of a turn-off. But, well... gotta take what you get, right?

Oh, and visually, John A wasn't all that appealing either. Cause... 1860's fluffy sideburns all the way, baby! :-P

More worrying that I know exactly the ep you're talking about! God, I'll never get those hours back.

Hmm, scruffy beards and sideburns... Yeah, no.

As for John A, I thought this was kind of amusing (no spoilers): http://vimeo.com/34266485 (http://vimeo.com/34266485)

Ha! It brings back...memories for sure. (Is that your PO Vimeo channel by any chance?) ;)

Of course it is. Well, it's not specifically a POB channel. Just my account where I dump all the videos I need to upload. The Tumblr video feature kinda sucks, so I'm putting everything on Vimeo and then link to that from the POB-themed Tumblr (http://pouterbridge.tumblr.com) I'm currently having a lot of fun with.

Eee! Can't wait to see it. It's gonna be like Christmas all over again the day I get my hands on this season. \o/

I'm so tempted to get at least a few episodes off iTunes to watch. But I know if I get one, I'll want them ALLLL. *grabby hands* And I don't just want digital copies, so then I'd wind up buying it twice.

But, I love hearing all excitement. XD

Well, I didn't much like the first half of the season, to be honest. But the last two episodes 3x10 and now 3x11 had redeeming qualities. Looks like most people loved Checkmate, but I've already read a few reactions of people who had more of a 'meh' reaction (c.f. neontiger55).

"Population 436" seemed to me as the really bad type of movie, I'm glad it's not, so I'll try to find it. Have you seen the trailer of "Escape Velocity" in his imdb page? I think it left me speachless... and blinking. But he's kinda cute there. :3

Eeeeek, ickle Outerbridge from 1999! And Wendy Crewson! Must see! NOW! :-) Lemme see if I can find it. Plus, science fiction. Yay! Instant win. Kinda reminded me of Babylon 5 a little. Cause, yes, I'm a sci-fi fan!

Update: Found it used on amazon for 0.89 EUR (+3 EUR postage). Uhm, yeah, I'm willing to invest that, even if it turns out a terrible movie. :-)

He is really cute there, worst scenario is to turn off the sound not to hear the cheesy lines and just enjoy the view! ^^ Plus it kinda reminded me of the original Star Trek series back with Cap. Kirk (the ...two episodes that I've seen) so it might be.. cult. Hehe

It's kinda strange, because he was also in Millennium around the same time, and in Millennium he looks like he's barely 20, but in that trailer he looks a lot older. Could be the stubble. Or the outfit. Or make-up. Or all of the above.

Haha, Original Trek, yep. Even though I consider myself a Trekkie, I haven't actually seen much TOS (The Original Series). I'm more of a Trekker of the 90's and beyond.

Well, Population 436 was quite decent a movie! Kinda reminded me of the Supernatural show which I'm watching these days. He had a rather small part and once again he played the bad boy :P (One of the many in this case)

Yeah, sometimes these little indies can surprise you, can't they? Not a great movie, in the grand scheme of things, but not total trash either.

I suddenly had the urge to see him in a kilt. -_- Sorry, random, but I had to share!

Uhm.... er.... YES! Scottish accent *and* a kilt. Wouldn't that be something! (Let's write a movie and get him cast in it.)
