Where had this gone wrong?

Neal listlessly picked at the melting papaya & mango ice cream in front of him. He wasn't usually one to go for comfort food, and when he did, there was a damn good reason for it.

His gaze wandered to the open laptop in front of him. The accursed treasure. Sara had left. Peter was still suspicious. Mozzie was breathing down his neck. He'd been so excited about it, and now it was ruining everything.

He knew he needed to find a way out. One that would cause as little hurt as possible. For anyone.

Poor Neal. He really is caught in the middle of a big mess. Now you're making me wonder how Eastin plans to sort this out. Without adding that orange jumpsuit back into Bomer's set wardrobe.

Yeah, how is Eastin gonna solve this without it ending up in a huge disaster. I have no idea. Guess we'll have to wait and see. And I have a feeling it's not gonna happen until January 2012...

The oracle's best (average accuracy of predictions a negative 6%:

Before the end of the season, Neal fakes his own death. Peter is overcome by grief and remorse. You-know-who kidnaps Elizabeth, causing Neal to reappear and giving him an opportunity to prove that relationships are more important to him than fabulous wealth.

Are we into Season 4 yet?

Moz and various geek friends find a loophole in international law which means that he and Neal comitted no crime. Peter beams. Sara phones Neal, hoping to arrange a date, but he says her turn doesn't come around again until 2041.

Note: I will probably write a fic for every facet of that plotline. Just like always.

OR:

Everybody is overcome by a sense of proportion. Really, what's one Degas more or less? One batch of treasure? Peter decides that bringing Neal and Moz to justice is like giving a cat a French maincure, i.e., not really worth the bother.

WHAT WOULD BE REALLY COOL:

Moz and Neal run with the treasure. Peter and team chase after. (No more case-of-the-week for the rest of Season 3!) Maybe Moz and Neal start returning things to their rightful owners, the way some fanfic has it. Sara buys a parakeet.

AS LIKELY AS THE ABOVE:

Neal joins a monastery. Moz opens a surveilance service. Peter and El smile at each other so much and for so long that their faces freeze that way, and when Neal dies of a terrible social disease, the Burkes' tactless grins throughout the funeral assure ostracism. Neal's grown daughter Pearl, whose deep blue eyes are unfortunately crossed, appears ut of nowhere and applies for her dad's old job. Peter instantly falls in love with her, overcome by her Evening in Paris, which displaces oxygen. Grinning, he asks her to cohabit.

El is last seen wildly sprinting toward Canada in her high heels, babbling that there is no end to it, which is certainly not true of Pearl.

The uber-villain of the series proves to be Stefano DiMera, enjoying his 256th incarnation and looking just as parasite-ridden as ever. June gives him the bedroom next to Neal's apartment and--next season's arc--sets out to reform him.

LOL! Okay, that cracked me up. How about this scenario:

When Mozzie is suddenly experiencing strange disturbances in his vision, his paranoia flares to new levels. He theorizes that they're all being held by aliens that are doing mind experiments on them, which actually turns out to be true. Neal and Mozzie have been held in a spaceship by aliens from the planet Zecor, and everything they have experienced in the last seven years was a shared virtual reality.

Mozzie and Neal find a way to break out of their alien prison without getting caught. Season 4 is going to be Neal and Mozzie seeking out the real Peter and Elizabeth Burke in New York.

I love it! Is that the kind of alien that The Doctor did in with an orange? I'm afraid I tend to mix my aliens up sometimes.

Speaking of aliens, do you know a kind of old sf writer named David Brin? I think he's American. His plots fall apart, but he is the absolute BEST at portraying aliens and their cultures.

I've been trying to work out a plot for Peter involving parallel universes. He just seems like the type.

Yeah, I think Neal is probably well into comfort eating mode by this point.

Yep, Neal will have had to gain a few pounds by the time this whole treasure disaster is over...
