Title: Some Things Are Better Left Alone
Author: TeeJay
[livejournal.com profile] whitecollar100 Prompt: #41 Evidence
Genre: Gen
Characters/Pairings: Peter, Neal
Word Count: 200
Rating: PG-13
Summary: A piece of evidence brings back memories for Peter he'd rather forget.
Author's Note: This could well play in the universe of a White Collar story I'm currently working on I have written (titled 'Off Target'), which is the same as the one I used in a previous drabble. I was hoping writing these drabbles would help continuing that story, but it's only marginally working so far...
Disclaimer: White Collar, its characters and its settings belong to Jeff Eastin and USA Network. And, guys? Your characters are not only welcome, they're wonderful. I'm just borrowing, I promise.

Sitting at his desk, Peter absently fingered the clear plastic bag with the red seal. The tiny copper-colored piece of metal inside glistened in the fluorescent light. Back in the hospital, Neal had asked if he could keep it. Peter had told him it was evidence, which translated to a 'No'.

There were no traces of blood left on the mushroomed slug, but Peter remembered the blood all too vividly. Even now, weeks after the incident, he still woke up in the middle of the night sometimes, panting and bathed in cold sweat. He'd look at his hands in the semi darkness to find that the slick, crimson liquid covering them had only existed in the dream of a distant yet vivid memory.

Seeing Neal back at work, not quite his usual buoyant self, but well on the way there, helped greatly in forgetting the whole ordeal.

From the corner of his eye he saw Neal approaching, peeking his head in the door. "Bad time?"

"No, come in."

Neal's gaze fell upon the evidence bag lying on Peter's desk. "Is that..."

"Yes. Do you still want to keep it?"

Neal hesitated. "No, maybe not. Some things are better left alone."
