Neal knew it was time that the beard came off. He'd known the moment would come, the moment where he'd have to stand up to what he'd decided to do.
He knew Peter would be there, at the airport, waiting with the handcuffs at the ready. The scraggly beard he'd grown while traveling all over Europe, he simply didn't want Peter to see it—to see him looking anything other than Neal Caffrey.
Of course now he was Richard Goldstein, and Richard was both too lazy to shave and didn't really care enough for impeccable looks. Richard Goldstein was a master at recovery, of Jewish descent, and specialized in finding long lost artwork through household clearances and flea markets. It was easy to sell that such a profession actually existed.
It hadn't been easy, but Richard had managed to return most of the treasure to its original owners. The remaining pieces, he'd anonymously left to the German Historical Museum in Berlin. And now it was time to go home.
Of course he'd contemplated to keep hiding. But in the end, he'd known that wasn't what he wanted. He wanted to go home, and that meant the beard had to go.
